I’ve been PCMag’s home entertainment expert for over 10 years, covering both TVs and everything you might want to connect to them. I’ve reviewed more than a thousand different consumer electronics products including headphones, speakers, TVs, and every major game system and VR headset of the last decade. I’m an ISF-certified TV calibrator and a THX-certified home theater professional, and I’m here to help you understand 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and even 8K (and to reassure you that you don’t need to worry about 8K at all for at least a few more years). Online simcity Building up a town is fairly easy. The game has good tutorial resources, and everything is fairly easy to understand. Watching a city grow is made better by the game's pretty graphics and relaxing soundscape. Then, winter hits, and everything goes to pot. Villagers start getting sick or starving, and suddenly half the town is gone, and you have to rebuild. It's a satisfying gameplay loop — easy to understand, but difficult to overcome. Its only real downfall is its lack of a solid endgame.

Before launch, Librande had started leading development on its first expansion pack, Cities of Tomorrow, and recalls worrying whether the add-on would ever be released. As teams of server technicians continued to doggedly bring the base game into shape, its longevity was quickly called into question. "The model was going to be a kind of live service," says Librande. "We would keep making expansion packs very much like The Sims, and were just going to add in these things over time. There was always this sense like out there, it was just going to get better and better."

City simulators like SimCity are serious games — the kind that gets coverage well beyond the video game press. The kind of game that appears in school curriculums. The kind of game your non-gaming uncle has probably spent hundreds of hours in. On the surface, they appear to be exactly what they say: a simulation of a city. But any simulation is only as good as the model it’s built on, and the model underpinning SimCity has quite the history. In the video above, I unboxed the secret ideology hiding in the formula that built SimCity, and how that’s reflected in one of the most popular gaming series of all time. What can I do to resolve this? SimCity originated with Maxis' desire to make a SimCity game in full 3D, and the studio's belief that the technology had finally gotten to a point that would support that, Quigley recalled on this week's edition of The Game Informer Show. EA greenlit the project, with a caveat: It had to be an always-online title, because that's the future that EA believed the gaming industry was heading toward. (Microtransactions were a part of EA's reasoning, said Quigley, but not the main impetus behind the decision.)
